Clothing Industry Contribute to Pollution

The clothing industry significantly impacts climate change, primarily through its extensive greenhouse gas emissions, water usage, and contributions to pollution.

  • Greenhouse Gas Emissions: The fashion industry contributes about 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions, more than the combined total from aviation and shipping.
  • Water Usage and Pollution: Textile production is water-intensive, and dyeing and finishing processes pollute water sources. The chemicals used can be harmful, affecting human health and ecosystems.
  • Manufacturing and Supply Chain: Turning raw materials into clothes involves energy-intensive manufacturing, often in regions where coal power is prevalent, increasing carbon emissions. The global supply chain, with garments produced in one country and sold in another, also adds to transportation emissions.

Other factors to consider are consumer behavior, material production (synthetic fiber), and public awareness.
